Toyota Prius goes Plural with New Additions to the FamilyPerformance Automotive Blog

We all know that one Prius is just a Prius, but what do you call four Prius vehicles? That’s the question Toyota is asking as they prepare to expand their Prius family with three new hybrid models.

Toyota announced at the Detroit Auto Show that the Prius lineup will soon include four vehicles, all of which will continue Toyota’s efforts to reduce emissions and drivers’ impact on the environment while providing excellent performance and gas mileage. However, each one will be unique, appealing to a wider variety of drivers.

“This is no ordinary family. It’s a modern family with a Prius for everyone,” said Bob Carter, Toyota Division Group vice president and general manager. “The Prius V is an all-new dedicated hybrid vehicle, and all future Prius family members will be as well. They will share common Prius attributes but will be unique, with a special appeal to different buyers.”

3rd Gen Prius, starting at $22,800

The 3rd Gen Prius is the base model Prius, off of which all the other Prius models are based. This model is available now at Performance Toyota in Kansas City, Omaha and Lincoln.

  • 51 city/48 highway mpg
  • 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder hybrid engine
  • 98 horsepower
  • 105 pound-feet torque

Toyota Prius V

Available at your local Performance Toyota late this summer, the Prius V aims to be a more family-friendly vehicle for the active environmentally-conscious with comfortable seating for five.

  • 42 city/38 highway mpg
  • Resin panoramic view moon roof with power retractable sun shades, a first for Toyota
  • Sliding and reclining rear seats
  • Toyota Entune
  • 50 percent more cargo room than the 3rd Gen Prius

Toyota Prius C

Expected to go on sale in early 2012, the Prius C is the perfect vehicle for drivers who live and work in the city. It will be the most fuel efficient and affordable vehicle in the group and the most value-oriented hybrid in the U.S. market.

Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid

The most advanced of these vehicles, the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid will bring even more fuel efficiency to the Prius family. The Prius Plug-In has a 13 mile electric-only driving range, allowing those who live close to work to run solely on battery power. The Plug-In can obtain a full-charge from a standard 110V household electric outlet in three hours and can be topped off at any time. Initially, the Prius Plug-In Hybrid will only be offered in 14 states on the east and west coasts. However, we can expect to see this exceptional vehicle in Nebraska a year after it makes its official debut in the U.S., possibly as soon as late 2012.

With gas prices pushing $3 and expected to go even higher over the next few years, more drivers are seeing hybrids as a necessity. Toyota understands this and is doing what they can to bring you even more fuel efficient, comfortable, performance-driven hybrids. The expanded Prius family offers you even more ways to be environmentally-conscious while easing the strain on your wallet at the gas pump.

With the new additions to the Toyota Prius family, the question remains: What do you call more than one Prius? Do you stick with Prius or go with something more fun like Prii or Prien? Toyota is encouraging you to cast your vote at Toyota.com. The official plural name will be released at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show in February.
