Taking your pet in the car with you can be a challenging task.  Often times, there is not enough room in the vehicle or not enough protection to keep your pet from being a distraction.  When traveling with your canine friends, make sure you have the tools necessary to keep your pet safe.

Your pet should be kept in a tethered down kennel, in a dog safety seat or with a dog seat belt.  Any of these options allow your dog to be comfortable without distracting you from driving, as well as keeping your pet safe in the event of an accident.  You should also keep in mind that it is never safe to allow your dog to stick its head out the window.  Flying debris can hit your dog and cause harm.  You should also never allow your pet to travel in an open pickup bed.

Lucky for pet lovers, the American Automobile Association has compiled a list of vehicles that make it easy to take your furry friends on any adventure, whether it’s running errands around town or taking a road trip with the family.  These were chosen based on crash test ratings, safety features, ease of animal ingress and egress, cargo area size, availability of tie-down hooks and easy-to-clean interiors.

Here are a few of vehicles that made the list, along with some of their pet-friendly features:

Honda Element

  • Interior features and upholstery can be hosed out
  • A pet lovers accessory group is offered, which includes a ramp, second row seat covers and a soft-sided kennel that can be secured to the vehicle

Toyota Venza

  • Rear tailgate ramp
  • Waterproof seat covers
  • Adjustable harness/booster seat pet restraint system
  • Adjustable pet barrier
  • Dog tethers

Ford Escape Hybrid

  • Large cargo area
  • Available rubber floor mats
  • Available pet divider
