Potholes are everywhere! Everyone who has lived in Nebraska over the winter understands that potholes can become a real problem for drivers, and a dent in the rim can cost a pretty penny. If you know of a pothole that needs to be repaired in your local area please report them. All information for reporting can be found here for Omaha and here for Lincoln.
Be sure to walk around your vehicle often in the winter to check for damage caused by potholes. Signs of a pothole are bulging in the sidewall area of the tire, dents, leaks, rusting, and of course a flat tire can all be caused by a pothole.
To avoid damage caused by potholes:
- Maintain full air pressure in all tires to provide as much cushion as possible between the pothole and the rim of the tire.
- Watch for potholes by leaving plenty of space between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Before swerving around a pothole, be sure to check surrounding traffic.
- If a pothole cannot be avoided, slow down. Hitting a pothole at high speed increases the chance of damage to tires, wheels, shocks, struts or springs.
- When driving over a pothole-filled road, hold the steering wheel firmly to avoid losing control.
- Do not brake when directly over a pothole. Applying the brakes causes the car’s weight to shift to the front of the wheel and can increase damage from the impact.
- Beware of water and snow that may be concealing a deep pothole.
If your car does not seem to ride as smooth as it used to it could be caused by potholes that did damage to your shocks or alignment, be sure to have your alignment and shocks checked by your local service department.

Call teh State of Alabama’s (DOT) Department of Transportation. They have nothing better to do than build overpasses in my city. I am sure they can help you with creating more potholes and improperly repairing them.
