In July 2000, Toyota launched their new hybrid car, the Prius, in North America. A decade later, they are doing cartwheels celebrating its success, and Performance Toyota says “Happy Anniversary!”
In the 10 years since launching the Toyota Prius, over 1.8 million units have sold across the world, with nearly 900,000 sold in the U.S. alone. With owner loyalty being among the highest in the automotive industry, it’s evident Toyota has set the bar for other hybrids.
During a time when consumers are becoming more conscious of the impact we have on the environment, the Prius has provided an affordable transportation solution that earlier all-electronic cars couldn’t. It didn’t require recharging, and it eliminated the range limitations placed on drivers by other all-electronic vehicles.
Since the first generation Prius, Toyota has continually increased its performance level to offer customers the best in hybrid technology. The 2010 Prius is bigger, faster and cleaner when compared to earlier models. It boasts a 134 horsepower engine, a combined 50 mpg and a zero emissions level at rest.
Ten years of success has proved early critics of the Prius wrong. At the time, many believed Toyota was developing a solution to a non-existent problem, but customers saw the need for cheaper and cleaner transportation. Today, one in every two hybrids on American roads is a Prius.
As impressive as the Prius is today, even more extraordinary changes are in its future. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid is scheduled to go on sale in 2012. With all these advancements, the future of the Toyota Prius is exciting and certainly worth watching for the next ten years.
