Change Your Driving Habits for Better Fuel EconomyPerformance Automotive Blog

There is a lot of talk these days about hybrids, electric vehicles and cutting edge fuel saving technology you can find in new cars. Everyone wants better fuel efficiency, but what if you’re not in the market for a new car right now? The economy has been tight, and making your vehicle last as long as possible is a good way to pinch a few pennies. Even if you aren’t heading to the dealership showroom for a new fuel efficient car anytime soon, there are things you can to in order to lower your gas consumption. By making just a few changes to your everyday driving habits you can save some money at the pump.

  • Don’t be in such a hurry. As you increase your speed, you increase the aerodynamic drag of your vehicle. If you drive at 62 mph instead of 75 mph, you will reduce your fuel consumption by about 15 percent.
  • Roll em’ up. Driving with your windows open, particularly at highway speeds, will also increase drag and decrease your fuel economy up to 10 percent.
  • Keep it steady. You are likely to save gas if you maintain a constant speed over long distances. This is where your cruise control comes in handy.
  • Check your tires. Be sure your tire air pressure is at the manufacturer recommended level. Just one tire under inflated by 2 PSI will increase your fuel consumption by one percent.
  • Avoid stop-and-go traffic. City driving uses more gas than highway driving, but by anticipating traffic and applying slow steady acceleration and braking, you can increase your fuel economy up to 20 percent.
  • Don’t idle for long. If you anticipate you will be stopped for more than one minute, turn the vehicle off. Restarting your car will use less gas than letting it idle for this much time.
  • Keep it light. Try not to carry heavy loads, and remember to remove the sand bags from your trunk come spring time.
  • Stay up-to-date on service. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedule to avoid poor fuel economy related to dirty air filters, old spark plugs or low fluid levels.
