With the goal of improving the environment, Toyota plans to introduce 11 hybrid vehicles by the end of 2012. These vehicles include a mix of redesigned existing hybrid models and all new models. One of the hybrid cars in the works is a midsize sedan with fuel efficiency over 94 miles per gallon.

Toyota Camry Hybrid (31/35 mpg)

- 2.4-liter, inline 4 engine
- 187 horsepower
Toyota Highlander Hybrid (28/28 mpg)
- Starting at $37,290
- 5-liter, V6 engine
- 280 horsepower
Plug in vehicles are also in Toyota’s near future, with a scheduled launch date in early 2012. The Prius Plug-in hybrid made its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show early this month. It boasts a 13 mile electric-only range and gas mileage over 50 miles per gallon. Toyota’s plug-ins are expected to have a starting price around $27,000.
Toyota is continuing development of a fuel-cell hybrid, expected to hit showroom floors in 2015, and next-generation batteries to replace larger lithium-ion batteries for better performance.
